Training Description

Psychiatric treatment for competency restoration differs from general psychiatric care in important ways. It requires a focused approach on the specific symptoms that most interfere with a defendant’s ability to understand the proceedings and assist counsel, while also emphasizing efficient treatment strategies that minimize delays in both legal proceedings and access to services for others awaiting restoration.

Forensic psychiatrist and competency restoration expert Darren Lish, MD, will describe emerging best practices in restoration treatment and how these approaches may differ from standard inpatient “treatment as usual.”

Instructors

Darren Lish, MD, DFAPA, is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where he serves as Deputy Director of Forensic Services and Medical Director of Colorado’s Forensic Community Based Services program. In this role, he oversees the treatment of individuals found Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (NGRI) who have been released to community supervision. He also provides direct psychiatric care to individuals in a jail-based competency restoration program. Previously, he served as Chief of Psychiatry for the Colorado Department of Corrections for over a decade.

Dr. Lish completed medical school and psychiatry residency training at Yale University School of Medicine. He completed fellowship training in forensic psychiatry at the University of Colorado and is board-certified in both general and forensic psychiatry. He has been qualified as an expert witness in both state and federal courts and serves as a court-appointed consultant in federal litigation related to states’ ability to provide effective competency restoration services.

Continuing Education

Participants can expect to receive 4 hours of continuing education credits (CEs) through ILPPP, which is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. ILPPP maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

Upon completion of this training, participants will be sent a Qualtrics survey link to evaluate the content and the speakers. Personalized CE certificates will be provided at the end of the Qualtrics survey. While completion of the evaluation is not required to be awared continuing education credits, we would greatly appreciate your feedback.

You must join no later than 12PM each day and stay for the duration of the presentation for all three days in order to receive the CE credits.

CE credits are applicable for licensed psychologists; other disciplines will need to check the relevant statutes and guidance regarding whether or not this can count towards any CE requirement.
