Training Description

This 12-hour, live virtual training provides the foundation necessary for mental health professionals to conduct forensic evaluations of youth with inappropriate sexual behaviors. Two experienced forensic clinicians with a national training platform will provide training on scientific bases and best practices for assessing general and sex-specific risk, writing informative reports, and making evidence-based treatment recommendations. Case examples will be woven throughout to illustrate objectives. This live virtual training will be spaced across three days (four hours per day) to allow wide participation regardless of time zone.


Training Overview

Trainees can expect coverage of the following topics:

Day 1:

  • Who are youth who engage in inappropriate sexual behavior?
  • Adolescent general and sexual development
  • Risk assessment basics (e.g., the RNR model)
  • Overview of juvenile general and violence risk assessment

Day 2:

  • Assessing specialized (sex-specficic) risk domains for youth
  • History of "risk" assessment of youth with inappropriate sexual behaviors
  • Specialized elements of data collection

Day 3:

  • Communicating with reports and using narrative formulations
  • Specialized treatment and matching to youths' needs
  • Wrap up

Instructors

Ivan Kruh, PhD, ABPP is a fellowship-trained and board-certified forensic psychologist specializing in the forensic mental health assessment of youth who are justice-involved. Dr. Kruh has been in private practice since 2012, focusing on juvenile forensic mental health assessments. He is currently a Partner at the National Youth Screening and Assessment Partners (NYSAP) a group that supports juvenile justice programs to implement state-of-the-science screening and assessment for behavioral health, forensic mental health, and risk management needs. Dr. Kruh was the Coordinator of a county-wide evaluation and treatment program for youth who had engaged in problematic sexual behavior in Westchester, NY. Prior to that, he was the Director of Washington State’s Juvenile Forensic Evaluation Services at Child Study & Treatment Center for ten years. During that time he also was a clinical assistant professor at the University of Washington, where he coordinated a post-doctoral training fellowship in juvenile forensic mental health.

Shoshanna Must, PhD, CSAT, ATSA-F is a New York State–licensed forensic psychologist with 20 years of experience specializing in the evaluation and treatment of individuals with sexual behavior problems, as well as providing therapy and support to affected family members. She is a Fellow of the Association for the Treatment and Prevention of Sexual Abuse (ATSA), a board member of NYS ATSA, and a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist through IITAP.

Dr. Must is the Clinical Director of the NYC office of Empire State Forensics, where she supervises licensed clinicians providing individual, group, and family treatment for both mandated and self-referred clients. She also serves as Evaluation Coordinator, conducting and supervising psychosexual risk assessments, SORA evaluations, and general psychological evaluations for state and federal courts and defense counsel. Her team contracts with the New York State Office of Mental Health and the Southern District of New York Federal Probation Department.

Additionally, Dr. Must consults for the Connecticut Judicial Branch, conducting quality-improvement audits of youth psychosexual evaluations and training court clinicians.


Continuing Education

Participants can expect to receive 12 hours of continuing education credits (CEs) approved by the American Psychological Association (APA). ILPPP is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. ILPPP maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

You must join no later than 12PM each day and stay for the duration of the presentation for all three days in order to receive the CE credits.

CE credits are applicable for licensed psychologists; other disciplines will need to check the relevant statutes and guidance regarding whether or not this can count towards any CE requirement.
